Bedford Junior Tournament Report - Nov 16th

Tue 18th Nov

The Bedford Junior Tournament on November 16th had it all - goals, rain, draws, bacon rolls, fixture pile-ups, more rain (though not as bad as St. Ives), recalculations of goal difference, extra time, golden goals, penalty flicks, floodlights.....everything!!!
The under 9 Pools saw Bedford come away with a creditable 2 wins and 2 loses. Cambridge 1st's winning the age group.
The two under 11 Bedford teams were not disgraced but in tight pools the ability to keep clean sheets could not be matched by scoring goals, with too many drawn matches. Bedford's very own Pete Rattu - a "game keeper turned poacher" led a side from his unique brand of training at MaggieB Middle School to the semis and eventual 3rd place. Both semis had ended in deadlock and went to extra time. The Cambridge v Letchworth game resulting in penalty flicks. Cambridge 1st's again winning the age group
Bedford had three teams in the Under 13s, the "A" team ending up in their pool with the exact same points and goal difference to Cambridge "A" . Once again extra time, or a golden goal could not separate them for the Pool winner. Bedford sadly lost 4-2 on penalty flicks......By now it was nearly dark and the floodlights were full on, Letchworth "A" won through their semi and beat Cambridge in the Final.
Thanks to all the coaches of the Bedford Teams (Pete, Steph, Jane, Charlie, Nat, Duncan, Chris & Matt) and their encouragement throughout the day to all the youngsters and all they do each Sunday. A big thanks to Matt and Karen for making the day so successful. Everyone appreciates the time and effort you both put in.

Bedford Juniors drowned but not washed-out!

Mon 6th Oct

Bedford Hockey Club's Junior Section took 3 mixed teams to a tournament in St. Ives on October 5th. On a morning when many sporting events were cancelled a team of under 9s and 2 under 11s played against teams from Cambridgeshire and surrounding districts. The weather was awful with driving rain throughout and the juniors did well to stay the course. Both U11 teams played well with wins in the round-robin and qualified for the semi-finals where unfortunately they were drawn against each other. The winning Bedford team played Peterborough in the final and lost a close match 1-0. So after the success at the end of last season, a runner-up and 3rd place is a great start to 2008-9, and despite all of them walking off drenched head to foot they all see the next tournament at Luton in 2 weeks as a chance for the U11s to progress further.
Squad Lists under 9 Jade and Yasmin Gallifont, Connor Riley, Emma Townson, Maddie Axford, Jodie Testa, Michael Bennell, Gabby Dennis, Ralph Salghuis, David Townson, Nathan Healey under 11 Jen Pearce, Pippa Jones, Elissa McNamara, Martha Haslam, Josh Rattu, Ella Manning, Ruth Pyall, Joel Franklin, Kate Axford, William Bates, Molly Hawkins, Ella Penton, Ellen Dewson, Alex Clewlow, Emilia Cook, Alicia Leech, Owen Franklin

Wed 28th May

Last weekend the Juniors took part in the Yazoo National Youth Hockey Festival. The tournament took the form of a mini olympics with each club being assigned a country - as you can see Bedford played representing South Africa! More pictures from the event can be seen on our galleries page - it looks like a great time was had by all, and not necessarily just playing hockey :)
