On November 15th, the Bedford Hockey Club Junior Section hosted their annual tournament for Junior Clubs within the region.
40 separate sides were entered, representing 11 different Hockey Clubs, with over 250 Junior players taking part in matches throughout the day.
Thankfully the weather was better than 2008 remaining dry throughout, though the final afternoon games did require the floodlights to be switched on as daylight faded.
An early start at 8 a.m. was required to ensure the morning session was ready for the Under 10s and 12s at 9.15.
The under 10s playing a round-robin format of 2 pools had Bedford's first team finishing a creditable 4th out of 12, with Luton winning the final.
Bedford also encouraged and mentored two of its Junior Umpires to run several of the U10 games after completing their level 1 courses.
The under 12s saw a big entry with 16 teams and the key factor being goal difference with several teams remaining undefeated. Peterborough eventually defeating Luton in the final.
In the afternoon the under 14s showed a good standard of Hockey and 2 teams stood out, Peterborough and Letchworth. They met in the final progressing undefeated throughout the afternoon. In a tight game, Letchworth took the lead only for Peterborough to score 2 goals in response, but Letchworth equalised in the dying seconds of the game. After no goals in extra time it went to flicks with Peterborough winning 4-3. Bedford Under 14s claimed 3rd spot beating Luton in the playoff 3-0.
A very successful day that owes major thanks to Matt and Karen for all their hard work and organising. Also to all the volunteers who helped with umpiring, time keeping, scoring, refreshments, cleaning up, and team and kit management.
The money made will help fund the Junior section for the remainder of 2009/10, pay for the new kits and further competition entries this season.
