Under 10s win Luton Tournament
On Sunday 3rd March, Bedford U10s entered the annual Luton Junior Tournament. We entered one Bedford team and one joint team with Luton. The Bedford team was Martha, Breeanne, Elliot, Jemma, Freddie, Gabi, Nathan and Michael. With no recognised goal keeper a few of the guys took turns, with Nathan going first. Our opening match was against the combined Luton and Bedford team. Bedford ones 3-0 with two goals for Gabi and one from Michael. The team were passing and moving well.
For the next two games Gemma went in goal with great wins over Berkhamstead 3-0 and Hemel Hempstead 4-0 with more goals for Breanne, Michael and Freddie. Three games down, no goals conceded, and without our goalkeepers even touching the ball yet.
With half the games gone we where in a good position. Our strategy was built on a strong defence built on Breeanne and Elliot supported by Gabi, Nathan and Martha at times, plus making sure we scored the first goal, and then building on it. With a consistent midfield based on Martha, Freddie and Michael we were tough to break down and we were accurate in front of goal all day.
With no semis or finals we knew we just had to keep going, knowing we had some tough games to come. A tight win over Leighton Buzzard with Gabi scoring our only goal took us into our penultimate match vs Aylesbury and Martha's second game in goal. Up against a team who for the second tournament running fielded no goalie and seven outfield players we knew we had to "shoot on sight" and half way through Nathan delivered, we then adopted 7 players behind the ball, to see out a tough game, with Martha making two good saves and the only time our goal was troubled all day.
Another victory, still no goals conceded, and into the final match. However the maths were worked out we knew a victory would see us home. Letchworth, fielding a young side, were swept away 3-0 with goals from Freddie and Gabi.
Six games, six wins , no goals conceded. The team played with a maturity beyond their years passing and moving well, not only winning against the tough teams, fearing no-one, but also making sure the weaker ones were beaten too without trying to dribble our way through. The team were a credit to themselves and the club and should be very proud.
