Rachel Jackson has taken over from Sherri Skene as the Bedford Hockey Club ladies 1st team captain for the upcoming season, the club has announced.

Centre back Jackson, 27, has been a consistent performer at the heart of the maroons defence for a number of years after joining the club as a schoolgirl and takes over the leadership of the team as they look for a swift return to the Investec National League. Rachel has a lot of National League experience both with Bedford and also whilst at university with Team Bath and Barnes Hockey Club and won the Durham Ladies Player of the Year award last season.

Kate Costin, the ladies club captain commented “Shez has been a great captain for us for 3 years with the obvious highlight being winning the East Premier league and getting promotion to the national league. Understandably with her wedding on the horizon she wants to hand over the reins and give the team some fresh energy and that is certainly what Rachel will provide. Jacko is highly respected player and well liked member of the team and has already shown as mixed captain and social secretary, what great organisational skills and creativity she has”

Rachel confirmed her excitement about taking on the role" I'm hugely honoured to be taking on the captaincy this year and am well aware of the sizeable boots that I will be filling. We've got a fantastic mixture of talented players, a knowledgeable coach and some very committed supporters, so I can't help but feel very positive about the upcoming season. I really believe we're in a great position to push for promotion and bring National League hockey back to Chester Road"

Bedford Hockey Club always welcome new playing members and this summer we are particularly keen to recruit players with aspirations of playing 1st or 2nd team hockey at the club in the East Prem and East Div 1 respectably. The club offers an excellent standard of coaching and has a strong, friendly social side.
