Bedford Girls' School pupil Kate Axford has been called-up to the England Hockey U16 Girls squad for their upcoming fixtures against the Netherlands.

Kate will be part of an 18-girl team who will train at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre on Good Friday, before taking on their Dutch counterparts in a series of three matches across the Channel over the Easter weekend.

Kate was selected for the U16s trip to the Netherlands after impressing on their 2014/15 programme in recent months, where she attended training and strength and conditioning camps alongside 25 other girls at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire.

Kate said: "I have learnt a great deal from my coaches at Bedford Girls' School and gained a lot of experience from playing my first season with Bedford Ladies.

"Playing alongside some of the best players in the country in my age group and receiving top-level coaching has really benefited my game."

Martin Mason-McLeod, Head of Hockey at Bedford Girls' School, added: "The Netherlands has always been a traditionally strong hockey nation, and their senior women's team are currently ranked number one in the world, so Kate can look forward to a tough test against their U16s."

Following England's trip to the Netherlands, the programme will see the U16 girls face the likes of Ulster and Belgium, culminating in the 6 Nations Championships at the end of July.
