After two taster sessions and a four-week summer programme numbers have continued to swell, and more players have been taking advantage of the opportunity to play an inclusive yet competitive sport but at a more relaxed pace.
Now throughout September, October and November two sessions per week will be held so as many people as possible can join in. There will be a midweek session every Wednesday evening from 7-8pm (including school holidays) with tea and cake after of course! starting on Wednesday 19th September and a second session especially targeting parents of existing junior players will take place each Sunday from 10-11am (excluding school holidays) starting on 23rd September.
Walking Hockey is a mixed activity and participants have ranged from former players to people new to hockey who have never picked up a stick before…everyone is welcome, and the ethos is very much fun mixed with light exercise. Positive comments have included …
“Some of us who came to walking hockey so loved it we want to continue - soon! Thanks to the club for putting this on” Steph Daniels
“What a fantastic time we have had over the past 4 weeks with the Walking Hockey. It has introduced new players to the game and has brought back past players, young and slightly more mature, who had never dreamed they would ever be able to participate in the game they love again. There has been gentle exercise, a competitive spirit, socialising and, above all, much laughter.”- Jean Fitch
Sessions will continue to be £5 pay as you go included tea and cake OR for more regular participants you can join as a BHC associate club member at £55 for the season and enjoy unlimited walking hockey sessions. Existing club members can join in the sessions held during the season as part of their membership, going forward. We plan to run Walking Hockey on an ongoing basis throughout the season with a winter break in December and January to avoid frozen pitches.
As part of the programme BHC will be developing Walking Hockey activators which will be helping facilitate the sessions. There is a small about of “coaching” to upskill the players but mostly enjoyable game play and the opportunity to socialise afterwards.
