Bedford Finish the Season with a ‘Boom, Boom, Boom’

Bedford welcomed Cambridge City to Chester Road for the last game of the season under glorious sunshine. Both teams have had a mixed season, above Cambridge, Bedford knew anything less than a 15 goal loss would secure a finish above their rivals. This was obviously not Bedford's mind set going into the game. Their aim for the weekend was to take 6 points, and start the building process for next season. A solid win in an exciting game against Dereham the day before was good preparation for the season finale.

Bedford started slowly and struggled to create anything meaningful. City looked the most threatening early on with some dangerous breaks that were dealt with well by Bedford Captain Paul Henwood at the back who had slotted in centre back from his usual duties at right half due to the absence of Saturday's MOM Grant Webster. The first real chance fell to City when a stray pass in the Bedford 23 lead to a free shot on goal. Luckily for Bedford the shot was hit wide and the score remained 0-0. Bedford responded with their first effort of the first half with Chigwada finding space in the D before smashing a shot at goal which the Cambridge keeper saved superbly to his left hand side.

This chance gave Bedford the boost they needed and the passes started to flow and real progress was made. Mason, who found himself just outside the Cambridge ‘D’ found the elusive Richard Evans open on the penalty spot after using some 3D skills. Evans took the ball well and swept it in to the side netting to open his account for the day.

City responded well and made several well-orchestrated moves forward in to the Bedford 23. A City forward found himself in acres of space at the top of the D and a rocket of a shot was launched at the Bedford goal. Luckily it was close to goalkeeper Simon Dolan who just had to stand strong to make the save.

Not long after, Bedford scored their second of the game with a slick and composed goal following some excellent ball movement all over the pitch. The ball was transferred from Turner at left back to Tarrant at right back via Henwood. Tarrant found Wilson down the line who fed in Mason just outside the D who for the second time in the game slid the ball to Richard Evans who slotted away for his second of the game.

The second half was more free-flowing with numerous chances at both ends. City moved the ball well and their forward found himself free in front of goal. The ball was hit in from the City right and the forward deflected the ball strongly towards the Bedford goal. Only lightning reactions from keeper Dolan kept the difference at 2 goals after getting a strong right hand to the ball from 4 feet away. City had several more shots on goal and several short corners all of which were dealt with well by Dolan and the Bedford defence.

Evans secured his hat trick after some great work down the left by Bedford. The ball was fired to Rich Hamilton in the left corner before some good work along the base line created an opening for Evans who scored his third goal in style.

With only minutes left, Dolan was hoping Bedford would keep the ball and preserve the hard fought clean sheet. In true Bedford fashion, it was not to be. City worked the ball down their right hand side before firing across the D. The City forward was unmarked just inside the penalty spot and swept a precise shot in to the bottom left corner of the goal much to the annoyance and dismay of Dolan. Seconds after the restart the whistle was blown, calling time on the game and the season.

All in all, the game concluded a good weekend for Bedford, and gives a solid platform to build on from next season. Man of the match following a solid performance was awarded to Rob Tarrant, despite hitting himself in the face with a ball during the warm up. DOD went to Simon Dolan following his impressive tantrum after losing his clean-sheet.
