It was far from a vintage performance, but Bedford retained their 5 point lead at the top of the East Prem thanks to a 2-0 away win against struggling Wisbech.

Bedford made two changes to their squad from the previous match with Elli Priston and Andrea Mason returning for the league leaders, who were looking to make it 7 wins on the bounce, at the expense of Wisbech who are struggling at the foot of the table.

Bedford made their intentions clear from the outset and scored their fastest goal of the campaign so far inside 20 seconds. Kate Costin pressed the Wisbech defence, turned the ball over before continuing towards the circle. Costin found Rebecca Budd, who had steamed forward into the attack, and she controlled the ball, rolled and finished with coolness and composure into the bottom corner. If Bedford thought there was going to be a goal fest in wet, miserable conditions, the Cambridgeshire side had other ideas and were resolute in defence and difficult to break down.

Bedford controlled much of the game from the outset, with the vast majority of the play in the Wisbech half but the slow, sandy pitch wasn’t suiting Tom Hewitt’s side’s strengths. Rachel Jackson and Elli Priston in the centre back roles enjoyed plenty of time and space on the ball and looked to build attacks and, while BHC enjoyed much territory, basic errors started creeping into the performance. Bedford had a penalty stroke appeal turned down, but did double their advantage just before the break with Alterderma MOTM Steph Holyoak slotting in the second bite of the cherry after the Wisbech keeper saved her initial effort.

At half time, Bedford spoke about increasing their intensity of play especially in their leading. The second 35 saw a number of half chances for Bedford and the Wisbech goalkeeper came out well to smother both Holyoak and Verity Mason McLeod, whilst Wisbech were not able to force Leanne Sargeant into any meaningful saves. Mason tried a deflection and Pinny was also pushing up to add numbers into the attack but all to no real avail as the team couldn’t add to the scoresheet. Bedford were left frustrated and disappointed in their collective team performance and will be looking to make amends next week when Brom Becks visit Chester Road. Push back at 1pm
