Shefford & Sandy 1s
Pre-season friendly; 2nd September @ BHC
Going into this game everyone knew it would be tough, mostly due to the heat that we were about to endure, but also because Shefford and Sandy 1s are usually a tough opposition.
A strong squad, from back to front, with some new faces coming into the squad; Sam Loxley
, Alisha Mcleod
and Vicki Sadler coming up from the 4s, having been strong members of their squad last season. All 3 players were in the starting 11, and they made a big impact upon the game from the get-go.
Bedford were quickly into the attack, and gained most of the possession, and the front line of Ellie Scott
and Alice Brady
, gave the midfield lots of options, and were getting high to attack the goal. When possession was lost and Bedford were defending, the ball didn't get much past the defensive 25, with the strength of the back line, consisting of McLeod, Sue Phillips
, Becky Burgoine and Sadler. Bedford were soon back into attack, a number of shots were fired, but the final touch into the goal unfortunately was not coming. But hope was never lost and the attacks continued to come throughout the whole game.
Shefford and Sandy were the first on the score sheet, despite the attacking and defending strength of the Bedford squad. But back into it, and head's were still up, and all were ready to go again. Due to the formation Shefford and Sandy were playing, Bedford midfielders, Loxley and Anna Heaton
had lots of space to move the ball around, and make the right decision before moving the ball on. This allowed right midfielder Grace Pountney
to sprint the ball forwards to the right of the D, move the ball to Scott, who drove into the 'danger zone' for a ball into Brady who slotted the ball home. A wonderfully worked goal, 'straight from the training ground'.
But Shefford and Sandy broke from their centre pass, and scored their 2nd within 2 minutes of the restart. Despite battling hard, and continuing to work hard for each other, as well as getting the ball in front of goal, there were no more goals.
A positive first pre-season friendly. Wootton Wanderers at home next weekend for the final pre-season friendly.
