Bedford suffered their biggest defeat of the season going down 6-0 away to a very strong Wimbledon outfit for whom Olympic Gold Medalist Crista Cullen netted a hattrick of penalty corners.

Bedford were missing SJ Darrington and Zoe Burford for the trip into the capital whilst Pete Rattu took on guest coach responsibilities. The maroons were expecting a tough afternoon and so it proved with Wimbledon dominating the possession stats but despite having to fend off multiple attacks, Bedford tackled well as a unit and Wimbledon’s goals were restricted to set pieces.

Wimbledon moved the ball with pace and accuracy and the Bedford press wasn’t able to apply the same levels of pressure versus previous games. Bedford’s desire and spirit didn’t waiver however despite Emma Pinny being knocked to the floor and Jenna Maclaren suffering a nasty bump to the cheek as both players but their bodies on the line for the cause. Crista Cullen struck the opening blow, a low drag flick into the bottom corner whilst current GB player Anna Toman and Libby Sherriff also converted first half set pieces.

Bedford threatened with isolated breaks using individual skill to try and break lines. Elli Priston enjoyed a fine game at centre back and beat a few players en route to the circle but the visitors were unable to mount any serious attempts on the wombles goal. After the break and again Bedford looked to keep their concentration with all the team battling hard to make vital interceptions especially defenders Rachel Jackson and Sam Turner.

Bedford were trying to contain but Wimbledon had superior speed to the ball and were able to score 3 more goals in the second half. Goalkeeper Leanne Sargeant, who was making some great stops, brought down a dons forward to concede a penalty stroke which she got a stick too but couldn’t prevent hitting the back of the net whilst Cullen helped herself to a hattrick with a rebounded shot and an absolutely unstoppable rocket of a drag flick which couldn’t have been more top corner! The Bedford midfield of Becca Budd, Becky Childs and Beth Noble alongside the excellent Emma Pinny worked tirelessly whilst Claire Higginson on her birthday picked up the man of the match votes plus a photo with Ed Sheeran!

Bedford will be looking forward to their home match against Sevenoaks this weekend. Push back at Chester Road is at 2-30pm
