St Albans arrived sporting two Bedford renegades who had been lured by the bright city lights and both teams made a steady start to the match, with Bedford's technical superiority matched by St Albans energy and strength. The deadlock was broken by a clean penalty corner strike by Alex Sawyer on 22 minutes. As the first half came to an end Bedford doubled their advantage with another Penalty corner this time David Galloway being in the right place to force the ball over the line.
The third quarter was dominated by Bedford's impressive control of the game through quality possession to maintain a two goal lead. Fearing that the game was petering out as a crowd spectacle Bedford then made the final quarter a tense affair finding multiple ways to give the ball away. St Albans efforts were finally rewarded with a converted Penalty corner on 66 minutes.
Despite a last minute Penalty Corner to st Albans Bedford hung on to the win, a fair result in the end
Lots to learn from the first match particularly how to convert being the better team into easier match winning positions but a solid start to the season for a team with many youngsters.
